Wyche, a 2004 second-team All-BIG EAST selection, led the Orange defensive linemen with 68 tackles and 5.5 sacks. His 15.0 tackles for a loss was the fifth-highest mark by an SU player. Wyche ranked first in the BIG EAST last season among down linemen with 5.7 tackles per game. He also recovered a fumble and blocked a kick in 2004.
Wyche ranks eighth on SU’s all-time tackles by a down lineman list with 145. He is also seventh on SU’s all-time tackles for a loss list with 23.5 for a loss of 94 yards.
Wyche is one of 123 student-athletes who have been named to the Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List. The BIG EAST has five players on the list, including H.B. Blades from Pittsburgh, Clark Harris from Rutgers, Travis Leffew from Louisville, and Dan Mozes from West Virginia.
To be eligible for the Rotary Lombardi Award, a player must play on the line of scrimmage. Tight ends and linebackers who line up within five yards of the ball are also eligible.
Wyche is also on the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List, presented annually to the Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year, and an All-America candidate.
Wyche and the Orange open the 2005 season on Sunday, September 4 when it hosts West Virginia. The game kicks off at 1:30 and will be nationally televised on ABC.
