The 2005 football Orange kickoff the season on Sunday, September 4 in the Carrier Dome against West Virginia at 1:30 P.M. The game will be televised nationally on ABC. When the Orange take the field, 10 student-athletes are slated to make their first career start and senior cornerback Steve Gregory is listed as the starter again after playing wide receiver in 2004. In addition, true freshmen Bruce Williams, Patrick Shadle and John Barker are listed on the Orange depth chart. Williams is a second-team receiver, while Shadle and Barker are still competing with sophomore Ricky Krautman for the place kicking duties. Tickets for the season opener are available online (click here), or at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B or 1-888-DOMETIX).
Senior Damien Rhodes, who is no stranger to the SU offense, is the starting tailback. In 2004, Rhodes was SU's leading rusher (870 yards on 153 carries and 10 touchdowns) while sharing the backfield with SU's second all-time leading rusher Walter Reyes. Redshirt freshman Kareem Jones is listed second on the two-deep, followed by Tim Washington and Paul Chiara vying for the third spot.
Senior Kurt Falke and sophomore Justin Outten are first-time starters on the offensive line, while wide receivers Tim Lane and Landel Bembo are listed first on the depth chart for the first time in their careers.
Defensively, junior nosetackle Chris Thorner, senior defensive end Ryan LaCasse, senior linebacker Tommy Harris and sophomore strong safety Dowayne Davis will make their first career starts.
