August 30: W is for Winning Streaks

SU’s longest winning streak is 16 games, which encompassed the entire 1959 national championship season and the first five games of the 1960 season. The longest regular season winning streak includes all of those games, plus the last seven games of 1958, for a total of 22 games. Pittsburgh ended both streaks when it beat SU 10-0 on Oct. 29, 1960.

The longest single season winning streak is 11 games, which was accomplished by the 1959 and the 1987 team. The 1987 team completed the regular season 11-0, then tied Auburn in the Sugar Bowl, 16-16. Those two seasons also account for the longest season opening winning streaks.
The longest home winning streak that SU has seen is 16 games, which included the last three games of the 1986 season, undefeated home records in the 1987 and 1988 seasons, and the first game of the 1989 season. Florida State ended that streak with a 41-10 victory on Oct. 7.
On the road, the longest streak put together by the Orange has been nine games (including bowls). The streak began in 1959 with the undefeated season, and then spilled over to the 1960 team, which won its first three games on the road. Army brought that streak to an end with a 9-6 win on Nov. 5. The longest regular season road winning streak is 11 games, which included all of the game mentioned above, and the last three games in 1958.
The Syracuse Orange have also put together 15 consecutive winning seasons twice in program history. The first such streak started in 1913 and lasted through 1927. The second 15-straight winning seasons streak started in 1987 and ended in 2001.
Syracuse opens the 2005 season on Sunday, September 4 against West Virginia. The game kicks off at 1:30 and will be televised nationally on ABC.
