Volleyball Heads To New Mexico For Hilton Albuquerque Classic

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The SU volleyball teams travels to Albuquerque, N.M. to play in the Hilton Albuquerque Volleyball Classic this weekend. The Orange (6-2) will play two matches on Friday versus Delaware State at 10:00 a.m. and Oral Roberts at 5:00 p.m. On Saturday, SU faces host New Mexico at 2:30 p.m.
The tournament is the last of three for the Orange before returning home to open BIG EAST play next weekend. SU is perfect on the road, defeating tournament hosts Boston College and Kent State, while also taking a non-conference match at Binghamton on Sept. 6. On neutral courts, the Orange is 3-2.
Senior Kelly Duan has led the way on the Orange attack, averaging 4.38 kills per game for a team-best 114 kills. Senior Kristen Conway is chipping in with her 88 kills and 3.26 kills per game. Senior setter Aila Dommestrup has tallied 287 assists so far this season, while sophomore libero Joscie Kaup has dug 96 balls for an average of 3.43 per game. Dommestrup and sophomore Jen Malcom both have a team-best 22 total blocks.
SU has never faced Delaware State or New Mexico, and has lost its only match it ever played against Oral Roberts in 1994.
Delaware State
The Hornets enter New Mexico with a 1-6 mark, with their lone win coming in a five-set match against Iona. Laura Huculak and Kinga Muszynski lead the DSU attack with 56 and 54 kills, respectively. Setter Dawn Alford has dished out 163 assists this season. Opponents have a hitting percentage of .248 while DSU is hitting .060.
Oral Roberts
The Golden Eagles (2-4) are coming off of their second win of the season, a 3-1 victory against Buffalo. Ori Zuzic is leading the team in hitting, averaging 4.92 kills per game for a total of 118. Zuzic has doubled the amount of attacks taken by the next ORU player, Kim Snow. Opponents have totaled 80.0 blocks against the Golden Eagles, while ORU has compiled 36.0.
New Mexico
The Lobos are 5-2 entering the tournament, with its only losses coming to New Mexico State and BIG EAST member Villanova. Setter Sarah Kwasigroch has registered 291 assists and 11.64 per game. Nicole Ryan leads the team in kills with 91. The Lobos are hitting .224 as a team.
