Men's Soccer Beats Marist, 1-0, In Double Overtime

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse junior Richard Asante put a shot in the bottom-left corner of the net in the 103rd minute to lift the Orange men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory against Marist at the SU Soccer Stadium.
SU earned a free kick after a Marist foul, and the Orange ran a designed play that led to sophomore Isaac Collings feeding Asante for the game-winner.
Both teams missed on scoring opportunities in regulation. SU threatened first with an early hard shot, which Marist goalkeeper Michael Danyo blocked. The rebound landed in front of an SU player, but Danyo made a save from the ground to spoil the opportunity.
The Red Foxes’ (0-1-0) best chance came with 30 seconds left in the first half. The offense snuck behind SU’s back line and fired two shots, both saved by Orange goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia. A third shot was aimed towards an open net, but an SU defender moved in front of the shot to save a goal.
Danyo stopped seven shots for Marist, while the freshman Cavicchia saved two in his first collegiate start for the Orange.
SU (1-0-0) continues its six-match home stand on Sunday, Sept. 4 when it hosts Loyola at 7:00 p.m. in the SU Soccer Stadium.
