
Fry Scores, But Cal Wins 3-1 Field Hockey Decision

BERKELEY, CALIF. -- Junior forward Ashley Fry (Douglassville, Pa.) scored her second goal in two days, but it came with 1:33 remaining in a contest that California already controlled, 3-0. The Bears defeated the Orange, 3-1, at Maxwell Family Field. SU wrapped up its three-game California road swing with a 1-2 record.
Teela Crosthwaite scored two goals for Cal, including the game's first at the 20:25 mark. The Bears held a 1-0 halftime lead.
Valentina Godrid netted her seventh goal of the season for California off a penalty corner at 46:07 of the second half. Crosthwaite finished a pass from Andrea Lo at 59:25 to increase the Cal margin to 3-0.
Fry got Syracuse on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at the 68:27 mark. It was her second goal of the season, eighth of her career. She scored off a penalty stroke in the victory against Stanford on Sept. 4.
Freshman Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) played all 70 minutes in goal and recorded eight saves. She had five stops in the first half.
For the game, Cal outshot Syracuse, 16-7, and had seven penalty corners to SU's two.
Veronica Sykes was the Bear goalkeeper. She finished with four saves.
Cal improved its record to 2-3. The Orange is 1-2 on the season and will next be in action on Friday, Sept. 9, against Kent at 3 p.m. It will be the Orange's 2005 home opener on the new AstroTurf at Coyne Field.
