GIFU, Japan – Syracuse graduates Anna Goodale and Helen Tanger both competed in the 2005 World Rowing Championships final race on Sunday. Tanger’s Netherlands crew finished just ahead of Goodale and the American crew, earning a bronze medal.
Tanger and the Netherlands crew made it to the finals after winning its heat with a time of 6:11.82. The US came in second in its heat, but won the repechage, or second-chance race, in 6:01.18 to advance to the finals where Tanger and Goodale would compete against each other.
Tanger and Goodale had never met, but knew of each other very well. “I knew that Anna made the US 8+ from the SU website,” said Tanger. “I checked which seat she was in so I would recognize her.”
In the finals, the US crew led all teams midway through the race. Australia pushed strong in the third quarter of the race, taking the lead and eventually the gold medal. Romania and the Netherlands followed suit, inching ahead of the US boat. Romania took second place, while the Netherlands narrowly beat the US for the bronze. Tanger’s Netherlands crew finished with a time of 5:59.61, while Goodale and the US clocked in at 5:59.88.
After the race, Goodale and Tanger met for the first time. Tanger rowed for the Orange in 2001, a crew that finished sixth in the nation. Goodale graduated from SU in 2005. The two discussed their lives at SU and their current rowing careers.
“We talked about the SU program, that it had been very good to us because we both made our national teams right after leaving SU. I think (head coach) Kris (Sanford) can take the credit for that. The SU program builds strong athletes, both physically and mentally.”
Tanger, a bronze medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, had already competed at the world-class level. The 2005 World Championships was the first such experience for Goodale, but she will continue to work to try and earn a spot on the US Olympic team in 2008.
“I couldn’t be prouder of Helen and Anna," said Sanford. "They are two people who definitely helped propel the program forward. It is great to see two former rowers further their careers and compete at a higher level. Helen has already won a bronze medal at the Olympics, and I hope Anna will train so she has the opportunity to compete at the Olympics as well.”
In 2005, the SU women’s rowing squad competed in its fifth NCAA Championship, and first since 2002. The crew begins its fall schedule on Oct. 9 when it competes in the Stonehurst Invitational held in Rochester.
