1/10/2006 1:45:13 PM | Men's Basketball, Dome 25
The Carrier Dome has had plenty of activity on January 10 throughout the past 25 years. The Syracuse men’s basketball team has played in the Dome eight times on this date, while the women’s hoops squad played its only game in the building on this date in 1983.
Most recently, the Orange faced conference foe Boston College in 2004. Gerry McNamara was 8-for-15 from the floor, including 6-for-9 from three-point range and finished with 26 points, leading the Orange to a 96-73 victory. McNamara helped extinguish an Eagles’ comeback, scoring 11 of SU’s 13 points in a stretch that increased SU’s lead from 12 to 21. The win was head coach Jim Boeheim’s 664th career victory, tying him with legendary UCLA coach John Wooden on the NCAA Division I all-time wins list.
In 1998, head coach Denny Crum led his University of Louisville Cardinals into the Dome. It was U of L’s second trip to the Dome in a10-month period. Syracuse took on another BIG EAST foe on this date in 1996. The Orange used solid defense and outstanding free throw shooting to defeat Providence, 77-75. Syracuse led by nine at halftime, but the Friars opened the second half on a 13-2 run to the score with 16:00 remaining. The remainder of the game featured several lead changes as neither could pull away, but Burgan’s two free throws with 1:17 left gave SU the lead for good. The Orange hit its final six free throws to seal the victory. Overall, the Orange was 30-of-33 from the free throw line, including a perfect 19-of-19 in the second half. John Wallace led SU with 22 points.
