The Carrier Dome has hosted just one event on January 12 throughout the last 25 years. In 1999, the Syracuse men’s basketball squad took on the Providence Friars in a BIG EAST showdown in front of 17,218 fans.
Providence took an early lead, outscoring the Orange 8-2 in the first four minutes of the game. Sophomore Allen Griffin hit a three-pointer to spark a 21-3 SU scoring run and Syracuse held a 36-27 halftime advantage. The Friars quickly erased the deficit and took a 40-38 advantage five minutes into the second half. Syracuse went on a 9-2 scoring run to re-take the lead, 47-42. However, Providence answered by scoring nine straight points to take the lead for good and went on to a 67-58 victory.
Griffin finished with 18 points to lead the Orange while Tony Bland contributed 11 points off the bench.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
