This Day in Dome History: January 13

The Syracuse men’s basketball team has played three times in the Carrier Dome on this date. The Orange has a 2-1 record in those contests.

In 2003, Syracuse entertained the Missouri Tigers. SU entered the game on a 10-game winning streak and appeared in the coaches’ poll for the first time that season at No. 25. Missouri came into the game ranked No. 11. Clinging to a four-point lead, 61-57, with six minutes left in the game, SU used a pair of three-point buckets by freshman Gerry McNamara and another one by Carmelo Anthony, along with a free-throw by Hakim Warrick to give the Orange a 14-point margin, 71-57. The Orange held the Tigers at bay down the stretch and recorded a 76-69 victory, its 11^th-straight win. Warrick finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Anthony had 16 points and 11 rebounds. McNamara scored 14 points, dished out seven assists and recorded four steals.

In 2001, SU hosted BIG EAST foe West Virginia. The Orange led by as many as 16 in the second half, but the Mountaineers wouldn’t go away and cut the lead to three, 78-75 with 2:34 remaining in the game. DeShaun Williams scored the next six points and SU went on to an 86-80 win. Preston Shumpert led the Orange with 25 points and Williams finished with 23 points.

Syracuse’s only loss on this date in the Dome came in 1998 in its conference opener. Jason Hart had a season-high 22 points and Ryan Blackwell had his sixth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds in a 76-64 loss to Providence.

More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.

In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
