Orange Loses To Marquette, 71-57, At The Dome

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Redshirt freshman Sara Antolick (Bethlehem, Pa.) recorded 12 points and nine rebounds as the Orange lost to visiting Marquette, 71-57, on Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Carrier Dome. Sophomore Vaida Sipaviciute (Kaunas, Lithuania) notched her 500th career point in the game as she totaled 12 points, four blocks, and a career-high four assists.
Antolick was one rebound shy of a double-double for the third time this season. Sipaviciute tallied her 500th point at the 16:06 mark in the second half after drilling a pair of free throws. It was also the eighth time this season that Sipaviciute blocked at least three shots in a game. Freshman Jenny Eckhart (Libertyville, Ill.) added 11 points for SU.
Marquette jumped out of the gate with a 9-2 lead five minutes into the game. Krystal Ellis was hot early and scored five of the Golden Eagles’ first nine points. Marquette kept a steady lead throughout the first 10 minutes and led 17-9 midway through the opening period. The SU defense came alive in the final 10 minutes and allowed just six points as the Orange went on a 12-6 run to close out the half. Freshman Keri Laimbeer (Orchard Lake, Mich.) provided the spark for SU, playing in her first game since Dec. 29 and scoring four of her six points during that stretch. Eckhart tied the game, 21-21, with a jumper from the top of the lane, but Ellis tallied the final bucket of the half to give Marquette the 23-21 halftime edge.
The Syracuse defense allowed just 23 points in the first half, which ties for the fewest by an Orange opponent this season. SU allowed the same amount against Niagara on Nov. 23.
At the beginning of the second half, Jasmine McCullough scored the first five points for Marquette to open up a seven-point lead, 28-21. Sipaviciute cut the deficit to five points, 32-27, with two free throws that gave her 500 points in her Orange career. From that point, Marquette went on an 8-2 scoring stretch that gave the Golden Eagles an 11-point cushion, 40-29, with 13:41 left to play. SU got as close as seven, 58-51, with 3:15 to play, but Marquette pulled away for the win.
For Marquette (10-5, 2-2), McCullough matched her career-best with 19 points while hauling in seven rebounds. Ellis recorded 15 points and Christina Quaye added 14 points for the Golden Eagles.
Marquette capitalized on 17 Orange turnovers as they converted them into 20 points. SU only managed seven points off of 13 Golden Eagles in the game. Syracuse’s eight blocked shots in the game tied its season-high.
SU (7-9, 0-5) heads to the Sunshine State on Wednesday, Jan. 18 for a 7:00 p.m. BIG EAST contest at South Florida before hosting Cincinnati next Saturday at the Carrier Dome.
