This Day in Dome History: January 20

Derrick Coleman pulled down a career high 21 rebounds to go along with 23 points in an 87-86 loss to Providence on this date in 1990. It was the second-highest rebounding total in Carrier Dome history, topped only by Dan Schayes’ 23 boards against Georgetown in 1981. Coleman also laid claim to the third-highest rebounding total in the history of the BIG EAST Conference. His 23 points made him just the fifth SU player to top the 1,800 point plateau, with a career total of 1,811.

Billy Owens tied with the Friars’ Eric Murdock for a game-high 25 points, while Michael Edwards recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 assists. Four Orange players in all reached double figures, including Steve Thompson’s 13-point performance.

After falling behind 0-2 on the game’s initial play, Syracuse recovered and took a 4-2 lead at the 18:17 mark of the first half. The Orange continued to build its lead, gaining as much as a 10-point advantage before settling into a score of 34-32 at halftime. In the second period the two teams battled back and forth, trading the lead seven times. SU held on to an 86-85 lead with 37 seconds remaining and David Johnson heading to the free throw line for a one-and-one opportunity. Johnson missed the first and Providence recovered the rebound, setting Murdock up for a 15-foot game-winning jumper with three seconds left to play. The shot was good and the Friars escaped with an 87-86 win.

SU played in front of 32,401 fans, marking the third crowd of more than 30,000 that season. The night’s attendance was enough to put the all-time Carrier Dome attendance total over the four million mark.

More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.

In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events.
