Syracuse is undefeated on this date in Carrier Dome history, making it the second consecutive day of perfect performances.
SU tied the best 20-game start in school history (19-1) with a win against West Virginia, 72-64, in front of a season-high crowd of 29,077 at the Carrier Dome on this date in 2005. Hakim Warrick led the Orange as he recorded his 10th double-double of the season with 22 points and 13 rebounds. His numbers on the boards pushed Warrick past both Bill Smith (903) and Billy Owens (910) on the SU career rebounding chart, and brought his career total to 912.
After being shut out in the first half, Gerry McNamara retaliated in the second by putting up 18 points, including five baskets from three-point range. Billy Edelin matched his season high of 12 points coming off of the bench.
A 2003 match-up against Seton Hall saw five Orange score in double figures as Syracuse completed a season sweep of the Pirates, 83-65. Hakim Warrick put up his fourth straight double-double and Billy Edelin recorded 11 points and six assists in his Carrier Dome debut. The game marked the fifth win of the season when five Syracuse players reached double-digit scoring.
In 1986, Rafael Addison scored 29 points and recorded seven assists as SU beat Providence, 95-73. Dwayne “Pearl” Washington put up a double-double, adding 16 points and 11 assists to the box score.
Syracuse never trailed in the game’s first half and at one point built a 19-point lead, but the Friars didn’t go away and a late run closed the halftime deficit to 45-35. In the second period, the Orange went on a run of its own, quickly reclaiming a comfortable lead. SU got as far as 24 points in front of the Friars and coasted to a convincing win.
Gene Waldron scored 17 points in a 68-57 Syracuse win over St. John’s on this date in 1983. Leo Rautins, father of current Syracuse freshman Andy, pulled down ten rebounds to compliment eight points and six assists.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
