Rafael Addison became the third Syracuse men's basketball player to score 1,700 points in his career on January 25, 1986 in the Orange's 80-67 triumph against Connecticut in the Carrier Dome. Addison scored 21 points against the Huskies, giving him 1,703 in his career. He joined SU standouts Dave Bing and Erich Santifer as the only players to reach the 1,700-point plateau. Addison finished his career with 1,876 points which ranks 10th on Syracuse's all-time scoring list.
In Syracuse's only other game in the Carrier Dome on this date, the Orange defeated St. John's, 58-56. The Red Storm led by one at halftime, but SU came back in the second half and lead by six with 6:44 remaining. St. John's tied the score on Malik Sealy's layoup with 4:32 left on the clock. Current SU assistant coach Mike Hopkins went to the free-throw line with 37.6 ticks left on the clock for a one-and-one with the score tied, 56-56. He made his first and missed his second to give SU the lead for good. Lawrence Moten made one-of-two free throws with 11.3 seconds remaining for Syracuse's final point. Moten finished the game with a team-high 20 points.
