SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Redshirt freshman Sara Antolick (Bethlehem, Pa.) registered career highs with 13 points and three blocks, but West Virginia came away with a 74-52 BIG EAST win against the Orange on Saturday, Jan. 7 in front of a season-high crowd of 741 in the Carrier Dome.
Antolick finished the night 5-for-11 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from the foul line. She also grabbed eight rebounds. Junior Tracy Harbut (Lexington, Ky.) had 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while freshman Jenny Eckhart (Libertyville, Ill.) recorded 11 points.
Harbut moved into ninth on the assists by a junior list with 77. She passed Marita Coffey and trails Erin Kenneally who ranks eighth with 78 assists. It is also the ninth time this season that Harbut has reached double figures.
Sophomore center Vaida Sipaviciute (Kaunas, Lithuania) recorded a block in the game, which gives her 99 for her career. She is now tied with Bonnie Baker on the all-time Orange ledger.
Both teams struggled to find the basket in the first minutes of the game with West Virginia scoring the contest’s first points at the 16:56 mark. SU had an early 7-5 lead, but the Mountaineers scored 13 unanswered points to take an 18-7 margin midway through the first stanza. The WVU defense held SU without a point for more than five minutes during the scoring spurt. The Orange made an 11-4 run later in the half to cut the deficit to 24-21, but WVU quickly responded and ended the half with an 11-3 run to push its lead to 35-24.
The Mountaineers began the second half as it ended the first, scoring eight-straight points to increase its cushion to 43-24, their largest lead of the game. That lead proved to be enough, as SU only got within 12, 47-35, at the 13:35 mark.
Chakhia Cole paced the way for the Mountaineers (8-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Meg Bulger recorded a double-double for WVU with 17 points and 10 boards. Yinka Sanni chipped in with 15 points and Yelena Leuchanka had 12.
SU (7-7, 0-3 BIG EAST) returns to the court on Tuesday, Jan. 10 when it travels to Villanova for a 7:30 p.m. BIG EAST contest. The game is the league’s “Tuesday Game of the Week” and will be televised on CSTV.
