Syracuse, N.Y.- For the second-consecutive season, Syracuse defeated South Florida in its final regular season game. This year, junior Jen Taormina scored the game-winner midway through the second half to give the Orange the victory, 1-0. Freshman goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan recorded her sixth shutout of the season, the fourth-most in Syracuse history.
The Orange came out strong in the first half as sophomore Amanda Arcuri shot wide of the net one minute in. Sophomore Sarah VanSickle took a shot of the corner from the top of the box that sailed high over the crossbar. At 13:53, Arcuri broke through the left side of the Bulls’ defense, but her shot again went wide. At 25:28, sophomore Lauren Cappelli served a corner kick into the box and sophomore Karrah Benson headed it toward the goal, but a USF defender deflected it away from the net. The Bulls managed six shots in the period, but none were major threats.
In the second half, the Bulls had the offensive advantage, registering five shots and three corner kicks. After USF’s Jaleesa Scott received a yellow card, Benson served the free kick to the far post, but the Orange was unable to get a shot off it. The Orange’s first shot in the half was Taormina’s goal. In the 74th minute, freshman Chelsea Berry took a throw in that deflected off a USF player back to her. Berry crossed the ball to the far post, where Taormina was able to get a leg on it and push it over the goal line for her first tally of the season.
The Orange closes out the season with an overall record of 4-12-3 and a BIG EAST mark of 3-7-1. Syracuse finishes in sixth place in the American Division of the BIG EAST. At halftime, the Orange held a ceremony to honor its two seniors, Maggie Falkenreck and Molly McManus. Falkenreck had three shots in the game and McManus recorded one.
