SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Graduate student Greg Rommel (Syracuse, N.Y.), senior Steve Panarelli (Farmingdale, N.Y.), junior Mike Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) and junior Evan Brady (Ridgewood, N.J.) have been selected as the 2007 men’s lacrosse team captains by their peers. It is the second time in their careers Rommel and Panarelli have been elected captains having also earned the honor in 2006.
Rommel started two games and scored two goals in 2006 before suffering a season-ending injury. He was a second-team All-American in 2005 after netting a career-high 28 points. Rommel was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Men’s At-Large First Team in 2004 and 2005 and he was chosen as the male recipient of the 2006 Soladay Award, the most prestigious honor presented to a student-athlete by the SU Department of Athletics.
Panarelli has earned All-America honors three times, including honorable mention laurels in 2006. He started all 15 games for the Orange last season as a defensive midfielder and finished the year with five goals and a total of six points. He led the team with 61 ground balls.
Leveille joined Panarelli as an honorable mention All-American in 2006. Leveille had a breakout sophomore season, finishing second on the team in scoring with 52 points, including 31 goals and a team-best 21 assists. He registered at least two points in every game last season, including a personal-best six (1g, 5a) versus Albany.
Brady saw time in all 15 games in 2006 and scooped up 24 ground balls.
Syracuse, which posted a 10-5 record in 2006, will conclude its fall schedule on Saturday, Oct. 14 with the annual Pumpkin Stickout at the Manley Field House Athletics Complex.
