Providence, R.I.- The Syracuse women’s soccer team snapped a seven-game winless streak with a 1-0 victory against BIG EAST rival Providence. The win give Syracuse four points in BIG EAST play and propels them into seventh place, past Providence. Sophomore Sarah VanSickle headed in the game-winner off a cross from freshman Tessa MacDougall in the 53rd minute. Freshman goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan made four saves for her fourth shutout of the season, her third in the past four games. Bennett-Hattan is tied for fifth on the Syracuse single-season shutouts list.
The first period past without either team breaking into the scoring column. The Friars held a slight edge in shots at halftime, 4-3. Early in the second half, MacDougall collected the ball and brought it down the sidelines. She crossed the ball into the box where VanSickle headed it in at the near post to give the Orange the lead.
“We played well and had a better result than previous games,” said Syracuse head coach Pat Farmer. “(Providence) had the ball more than us, but we were more dangerous when we had it. The team responded well at halftime and went out there and did the things we talked about. The key was once we had the lead, we kept attacking and weren’t tentative. We kept the ball alive and killed the remaining time. It’s great to get points on the road and it’s a good sign heading into the UConn game.”
VanSickle and MacDougall are now tied for the team lead in points with four each. VanSickle’s goal was her team-leading second of the season and MacDougall is now tied with sophomore Amanda Arcuri for the team lead with two assists.
The Orange (2-9-3, 1-4-1 BIG EAST) visits Connecticut (5-7-1, 2-3-0 BIG EAST) Sunday at 1 p.m.
