SYRACUSE, N.Y. - On Wednesday, November 15, Syracuse University’s Athletic Department will assist the Salvation Army in ringing in the Red Kettle Campaign. Salvation Army volunteers will ring bells at Red Kettles outside of the Carrier Dome prior to the start of SU's game against Northeastern. SU Men’s Basketball is welcoming The Salvation Army onto the court at halftime to highlight the start of the critical holiday efforts. Juli Boeheim, wife of Coach Jim Boeheim, will lead the team of Salvation Army supporters onto the court for the event. Joining her on the court will be Advisory Board members, supporters and staff of The Salvation Army of the Syracuse Area.
Those famous Red Kettles will be deployed at sites throughout Onondaga County to receive donations so that Christmas will be a little brighter for needy families in our community. Cash donations placed in the kettles are used to fund holiday season meals and programs for less fortunate children and adults in Onondaga County.
“We have seen increased needs in the community throughout year,” according to Major John Morrison, Area Coordinator. “The number of people seeking food and other assistance from our Emergency and Practical Assistance Services (Food Pantry) is significantly higher than last year. These holiday efforts are more vital than ever, as we must be able to provide for our neighbors in need.”
Last year, a total of 2,428 families registered for food and gifts through the Christmas Bureau, 300 more families than in 2004. There were 5,876 children in those families. Food baskets were also distributed to 522 households of seniors and the disabled.
On Christmas Bureau Distribution Day at the Oncenter, less fortunate families receive a toy, a book, and a stocking stuffer grab bag for each of their children, as well as a holiday food basket containing food for a holiday meal and three days worth of food. This year, that community giving will take place on December 21.
