Syracuse basketball alum Sean Kerins is back on the Orange team, joining the athletics department as the associate athletics director for development, with an emphasis on major gifts. Kerins, who earned a BS in engineering in 1984, will be responsible for serving as the primary fundraiser for major gifts to the athletics department, and working in conjunction with Institutional Advancement.
“Having Sean Kerins join our staff is awesome,” said Syracuse Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross. “I have been trying to put together a dream team staff for SU athletics and Sean adds to that vision. We are excited to have his wealth of knowledge, his passion and love for SU and his work ethic. His successful business background adds to our goal of making our department extraordinary. His experience as a hoop player for Syracuse gives him a great perspective of how we are enhancing the culture of SU athletics.”
Upon graduation from Syracuse, Sean spent four years with General Motors, completing a comprehensive management training program that included roles in sales, distribution, and systems integration. From there he joined Coopers & Lybrand Consulting where he spent nearly seven years successfully climbing the ranks to Managing Associate. Along the way he earned his MBA from Northwestern's Kellogg Graduate School of Management. In 1996, Kerins joined the EMC Corporation, a leader in data storage technology. During his 10 year tenure, he held several leadership positions including Director for OEM & Reseller Sales Operations, Director for Global Marketing Operations, Director for Asia-Pacific Sales Operations & Professional Services, and Vice President for EMEA Marketing. Most recently, he completed a rotational assignment as a Vice-President for EMC's Technology Solutions business in North America.
“As much as I enjoyed my time as a student-athlete at Syracuse, only in retrospect do I truly appreciate the importance of those years in terms of all the years that followed,” Kerins said. “Having spent the last 20 years in a variety of corporate roles, I'm continually reminded of the value people attribute to combined athletic and academic credentials from Syracuse University. I intend to do my part to ensure that current and future student-athletes will benefit from similar opportunities and experiences for years to come. I am excited to come back and give back to something I know and about which I am passionate.”
In addition to his role in the Orange Club, Kerins will work with the Syracuse ISP Sports Network as a color analyst for the men’s basketball radio broadcasts and Orange All Access post-game show.
“To have Sean back is a tremendous asset for our athletic program,” said Syracuse head men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim. “He's one of the smartest players and students we've ever had. He loves Syracuse University. I think it is really important to get someone in here who has tremendous love for the University, tremendous ties within the University and is a real outstanding businessman in his own career. This will be nothing but a big positive boost for us.”
“The addition of Sean Kerins to the Orange Club staff is wonderful,” said senior associate athletics director Scott Sidwell. “Sean's great history with Syracuse Athletics and his tremendous resume in the corporate world are great for the Orange Club. In addition to his focus on major gifts for the athletics department, Sean will work in key Syracuse alumni markets around the country and work to reconnect former student-athletes to the department.”
