Several Syracuse University student-athletes visited The Oaks at Menorah Park retirement community Monday night to have dinner with the residents before they left for the holiday break. Members of the Syracuse women's lacrosse and track and field teams joined the residents for dinner, followed by a basketball trivia event.
"I think it's a great experience," sophomore Lindsay Morel, a member of the cross country and track teams, said of the event. "I think the student-athletes have a lot to offer everyone on campus and in the community. They can all really benefit from our help. This gives us a really great opportunity to be with people who we are not generally with on campus and brighten their days."
"It's great to spend time with them because they make me feel young," said Mike Walzer, who was seated with Morel. "This young lady is really outgoing and pleasant. I think it's a wonderful idea to have the student-athletes here with senior people. Some of them who don't have grandparents get a chance to spend time with us; and for us, it's a great experience to be with young people. Now I have a great reason to follow the track team in the spring."
"It's a good thing to give back to the community," senior lacrosse attack Jill DePetris said. "My sister (freshman attack Jackie DePetris) told me about it and it's nice to come here and spend time with these people who are so nice and appreciative."
