Jersey City, N.J. – Junior Fantasia Goodwin scored 14 points and gobbled up a career-best 17 rebounds but the Orange lost to St. Peter’s, 58-52. Freshman Nicole Michael led the Orange (1-3) in scoring for the second-consecutive game, recording 19 points.

Junior center Vaida Sipaviciute scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. It was the first time that two SU players recorded double-doubles since Sipaviciute and Tracy Harbut each posted one against Canisius on Dec. 4, 2005. Junior guard Mary Joe Riley led the Orange with a personal-best five assists.
The first half was close throughout with neither team gaining more than a four-point advantage. St. Peter’s (3-2) scored the game’s opening four points and did not trail until 9:26 remaining in the half. Michael scored on a layup as the Orange claimed its first lead at 13-11. Syracuse extended the advantage to four at 23-19 only to see the Peacocks score six of the half’s final seven points and head into intermission with a 25-24 lead.
The Orange quickly reclaimed its lead in the second half, gaining a 32-28 advantage. The Peacocks responded with a 12-0 run and took their largest lead of the evening at 40-32. Syracuse fought back and scored the 10 of the next 11 points, taking its final lead at 42-41. The Orange missed its next three baskets as the Peacocks took a six-point advantage. St. Peter’s hit seven free throws in the final minute to hold on for the six-point victory.
Syracuse was able to stuff the middle, outscoring the Peacocks 34-14 in the paint. The Orange was unable to capitalize, connecting on only 32.3 percent (20-62) of its shots, including 1-of-15 from 3-point range. Syracuse held the advantage on the glass, outrebounding St. Peter’s 44-37.
The Orange will look to get back to its winning ways on Sunday when they host Niagara at noon.
