SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The #17/14 Orange men’s basketball team (5-0) shuffles off to Buffalo for its first game away from the Carrier Dome when it meets Canisius (1-2) at the HSBC Arena at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25. The contest can be seen live in the Syracuse area on Time Warner Ch. 26. The Orange is one of three BIG EAST teams to have started the season with at least five wins joining Marquette (6-0) and Pittsburgh (5-0).
The Orange will put its 43-game winning streak against Empire State schools on the line against the Golden Griffins Saturday. Syracuse hasn’t lost to a team located in New York State since St. John’s bested the Orange by a point (76-75) in 2000.
Syracuse connected on a season-best 11 3-point field goals (six in the second half) to extend its season-opening winning streak to five with a 79-67 victory versus Charlotte on Nov. 22. It was the second consecutive game the Orange registered at least 10 field goals from beyond the arc (SU made 10 three’s against Northeastern) and its 11 triples represented half of its made field goals (22) against the 49ers.
Senior Demetris Nichols drilled a season-best five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 21 points versus Charlotte. Nichols has scored in double figures in every game so far in 2006-07 and he is averaging 15.0 points per game. Freshman Paul Harris registered his best scoring total of the young season with 17 points against the 49ers, including a personal-best 9-of-10 performance from the free-throw line. Junior point guard Josh Wright was also 9-for-10 from the charity stripe and tallied 14 points to go along with a game-best eight assists. As a team, the Orange was 24-of-28 (.857) from the foul line, its best single-game effort of the year.
Canisius picked up its first victory of the season on Nov. 22 with a 78-73 triumph at Colgate in overtime. Senior Corey Herring led the way for the Golden Griffins with 22 points. Herring is Canisius’ top scorer at 15.3 points per outing. Darnell Wilson is also averaging double-figure points for the Golden Griffins at 12.3 points per game.
Turnovers have plagued first-year coach Tom Parrotta’s club. Canisius is averaging more than 23 per game, including a season-high 30 in a loss to West Virginia on Nov. 18. Some of the damage has been contained by the Golden Griffins defense which is also forcing slightly more than 23 turnovers per contest, including an average of 11.3 steals a game.
Canisius has also struggled to rebound the ball, averaging 32.7 caroms per game. By comparison, the Orange is averaging 43.4 boards per contest. The Golden Griffins best rebounder is Chuck Harris at 5.0 per game.
Orange head coach Jim Boeheim has never lost against Canisius (16-0) and SU owns a 42-24 lead in the all-time series. Syracuse has won the last 17 meetings overall with Canisius’ last victory against the Orange coming on Feb. 15, 1975 in Buffalo.
