SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse Orange women’s basketball team is one of three initial teams selected to play in the inaugural Preseason Women’s National Invitational Championship (WNIC). The Orange will be joined by North Carolina, who is currently ranked second in the NCAA, and Rice for the 16-team tournament held from Nov. 9 through Nov. 18 in 2007.
Joining the Orange, Tar Heals and Owls will be 13 teams that will represent all of the nation’s top conferences. The tournament format will guarantee each team three games and the two clubs that reach the finals will play four total games.
The Preseason WNIC will serve as the launching pad for the postseason WNIC, which will feature 32 teams that are not in the NCAA Tournament field in 2008. The new postseason event will be created to rival the WNIT. When the WNIC begins play, approximately 140 Division I programs will be participating in postseason play.
The 2006 Orange currently owns a record of 2-4 and will resume play on Saturday in the Brown Classic. Syracuse will face Rhode Island at 3 p.m.
