SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse lost to the top team in the BIG EAST Friday night, losing to St. John’s 3-0 (30-20, 30-19, 30-21).

Freshman Kacie MacTavish led the team with eight kills and added six digs. Freshman Sarah Morton added six kills and a match-high five total blocks (two solo and three assists). Classmate Samantha Ainsworth also recorded six kills. Sophomore April Quigley led the team with 24 assists while junior Joscie Kaup posted a match-high 21 digs.
Syracuse (11-21, 5-7 BIG EAST) started the match strong, taking an early 4-1 and 6-2 lead. Trailing 12-9, St. John’s (26-1, 11-0 BIG EAST) scored the next five points to take a two-point lead. MacTavish recorded a kill and Kaup posted two aces as the Orange reclaimed the lead. St. John’s, who has not lost a game since September 24, closed out the first game on a 16-5 run to take a 1-0 advantage.
With the second game tied at 12, St. John’s scored nine of the next 11 points to take a seven-point advantage en route to the 11-point victory. Syracuse once again started the third game strong. With the score tied at six, Syracuse went on a 9-3 run to take its largest lead of the afternoon. However, trailing 16-12, St. John’s ended the match on an 18-5 to seal its 17th-straight victory.
Syracuse will look to return to its winning ways on Sunday as the Orange hosts Connecticut on Senior Day. First serve is set to begin at 2 p.m. at the Manley Field House.
