SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University men’s lacrosse team will play 13 games in 2007, six of which will be against opponents who qualified for last year’s NCAA Tournament. The upcoming slate is highlighted by a match with defending national champion Virginia on March 3 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore in the inaugural Face-Off Classic presented by Inside Lacrosse.
The Orange and Cavaliers is just one piece of the Face-Off Classic doubleheader. The other game pits Princeton against Johns Hopkins. The four lacrosse powers are the top four teams in Inside Lacrosse’s 2007 preseason rankings with Virginia holding the top spot in the poll followed by Johns Hopkins, Syracuse and Princeton. The four schools have combined to win every national championship since 1991.
Ticket prices for the Face-Off Classic will be $10 for groups of 10 or more, $15 for lower level reserved seats and $25 for club level seats. Tickets for the event will go on sale in early December.
The Orange will play at least eight home games in 2007 and could have as many as nine (the location of the Georgetown game has not been determined).
The 88th season of varsity lacrosse at Syracuse will officially begin on Feb. 18, when Hobart visits the Carrier Dome for the third time in the last five years. Army, a team that will seek to avenge its 14-10 loss against the Orange last year, invades the Dome on Feb. 23.
The Virginia clash kicks off SU’s March slate which also features Georgetown (March 10) and consecutive home dates with Johns Hopkins (March 17) and Binghamton (March 24). The Orange closes the month with a March 31 game at Loyola.
April begins with another road match, this time at Princeton on April 7 at 12:00 p.m. As the regular season comes to a close, Syracuse will have the benefit of serving as the host school for four of its last five games. The stretch begins with a Carrier Dome showdown against Cornell on April 10. Dome dates with Rutgers (April 15) and Albany follow (April 21). The Orange’s final road contest will take place in Amherst, Mass. on April 28 when SU squares off with last year’s NCAA runner-up Massachusetts. SU returns home for its regular-season finale against Central New York rival Colgate on May 5.
2007 NCAA Tournament first-round games will be held at campus sites the weekend of May 12-13. This year’s NCAA quarterfinals will be hosted by Princeton (May 19) and the U.S. Naval Academy (May 20). The national semifinals and the NCAA championship game will be contested at M&T Bank Stadium on May 26 and 28, respectively.
In addition to the Orange’s 13 regular-season dates, SU will play two preseason scrimmages. Scrimmage dates and opponents have yet to be determined.
