The Syracuse University women’s basketball team (2-4) competes against Rhode Island on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. at the Brown Classic in Providence, R.I. The game can be heard live on suathletics.com with Brian Higgins calling the action. The Orange is coming off a 66-49 win at Colgate on Nov. 28. SU is 1-3 on the road and is looking to make it two in a row against Rhode Island.
A FIERCE FRESHMAN
Freshman forward Nicole Michael has already made an immediate impact on the Orange this season. Michael was recently named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week as a result of her significant contributions to the Orange. Michael became the first freshman since Julie McBride during the 2000-2001 season to lead the team in scoring in four consecutive games. She leads the team in scoring (38.3) and rebounding (8.3) and is second in assists (2.0). Michael has started all six games and is averaging 34.7 minutes per outing. One of Syracuse’s main offensive threats, she is first on the team in free-throw attempts and is second in overall field-goal attempts and 3-point field goals. The freshman scored 26 and 16 points in SU’s last two games against Niagara and Colgate. Michael also had five assists at Colgate.

SIGNS OF IMPROVEMENT
Junior center Vaida Sipaviciute seems to be hitting her stride, scoring in double-figures in each of Syracuse’s last three games. Sipaviciute matched Nichole Michael’s team-high 16 points on 8-of-11 (.727) shooting in Syracuse’s 66-49 victory at Colgate at on Nov. 28. The junior also recorded two rebounds and a block in her 24 minutes of action. Sipaviciute is first on the team in blocks per game (2.5) and field goal percentage, making 53.1 percent (34-64) of her attempts. She is tied for second in scoring (11.8) and is third in rebounding (5.7).
FANTASY WORLD
Junior Fantasia Goodwin continues to fill up the box score for Syracuse. Goodwin scored a career-high tying 14 points and matched Nicole Michael’s team-best eight rebounds in SU’s 66-49 win at Colgate on Nov. 29. The junior also had two assists and two steals in her 34 minutes of action. She has scored in double figures in five of the Orange’s six games, including the last three. Goodwin is second on the team in scoring (11.8), rebounding (8.2) and steals (1.7). She is Syracuse’s most prolific 3-point shooter, making 40.7 percent (11-27) of her attempts. Goodwin is also SU’s best free-throw shooter, connecting on 72.7 percent (8-11) of her chances. The Hastings, N.Y. native has made 26 of her 62 (.419) of her attempts from the field, good for second on the team.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
Rhode Island (1-6) is coming into the Brown Classic after a loss against No. 20 Michigan State. The Rams lost on the road, 67-40 on Nov. 29 against Michigan State after winning their first game of the season against Central Connecticut State University 75-63 on Nov. 25. Junior guard Safi Mojidi led the team with 12 points against Michigan. Sophomore center Tanja Licina scored a career high against Central Connecticut State University, to help the Rams win their first game of the season. Three starters, Licina, junior guard Mia Marcus and sophomore forward Jessica Magley, have started in all seven games the Rams have played so far. Mojidi leads the team in points with 78 and in assists with 31. Licina leads the team in total rebounds with 31. Marcus leads the team with 13 steals.
THE SYRACUSE-RHODE ISLAND SERIES
Syracuse and Rhode Island have played seven times, with Syracuse leading the series 5-2. The Rams and the Orange last met in December of 2000, when Syracuse defeated Rhode Island 72-58.
