In their first season with the Orange, freshmen Delone Carter and Brandon Gilbeaux both turned in impressive performances and were honored by being named to The Sporting News BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
Carter led the Orange with 713 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 156 carries in 2006. His 713 yards rank second in school history for rushing yards by a freshman. Only the school’s all-time leading rusher Joe Morris rushed for more yards in his freshman season, accumulating 1,001 yards.
Carter was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll following his performance against Wyoming. He rushed for a career-best 129 yards and four touchdowns, including all 50 of SU’s yards in overtime and two touchdowns, to help lead Syracuse to a victory against the Cowboys. His 129 rushing yards are the most in school history by a true freshman in a single game, eclipsing the mark of 94 yards set by Damien Rhodes in 2003.
Carter, who is the first freshman to lead the Orange in rushing since Morris in 1978, averaged 59.40 rushing yards per game, the 11th-best mark by a freshman in the NCAA and the fifth-highest by a true freshman. Carter is one of eight true freshman selected to the 24-player team.
Gilbeaux appeared in every game this season and recorded 21 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He posted a career-best six tackles, including one for loss, in the final game of the season against Rutgers.
