Junior Fantasia Goodwin tallied her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds versus TCU in the second game of the San Juan Shootout on Dec. 20. She also had two steals and an assists for SU. Goodwin was named to the San Juan Shootout All-Tournament Team for her efforts in the Orange’s two games. She had 17 points, five rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal in Syracuse’s 77-70 win against Loyola in the first game of the Shootout on Dec. 19. For the two games, the junior averaged 16.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.0 assists. She made 65.0 percent (13-20) of her attempts in the two games. Goodwin is second on the team in points with 14.1 and rebounds with 8.4. She is also first on the squad in field-goal and 3-point field-goal percentage, making 48.5 percent (64-132) of her attempts from the field and 48.9 percent (22-45) of her shots from downtown. Goodwin has scored in double-figures in five-consecutive games, including a career-high 24 points in her first career BIG EAST game at St. John’s on Dec. 7. She has reached the double-figure plateau in 10 of Syracuse’s 12 games this season. Goodwin is third in the BIG EAST and 41st in the country in 3-point field-goal percentage. She is also fourth in the BIG EAST in minutes played, sixth in defensive rebounds , sixth in 3-pointers made, eighth in rebounding and 23rd in scoring. Goodwin has already earned accolades this season by being named to Brown Classic All-Tournament team.

Freshman Nicole Michael recorded her fourth 20-plus point performance with 21 points in SU’s 77-70 win against Loyola in the first game of the San Juan Shootout on Dec. 19. She also had nine rebounds, one assist and one steal for the Orange. She followed the performance up with a nine-point, six-rebound, one assist, one steal outing versus TCU in the second game of the Shootout on Dec. 20. For the two games, the freshman averaged 15.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals. Michael leads SU in points with 16.4 and rebounds with 8.9. Michael has registered at least 16 points and five rebounds in nine of Syracuse’s 12 games. She has led the Orange in scoring seven times, rebounding six times, blocks and steals four times and assists three times. Michael is ninth overall and second for freshman in the BIG EAST in scoring and sixth overall and first for freshman in rebounding. She is also fourth overall and first for freshman in defensive rebounds at 6.6 per game. Michael’s three double-doubles are tied for 12th and her three 20-point plus point games are tied for ninth in the BIG EAST. She has already earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week accolades twice on Nov. 27 and Dec. 4 and was named the Most Valuable Player of the Brown Classic, hosted by Brown University on Dec. 2-3.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIFFS
The Canisius Golden Griffs (6-2, 0-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) are coming off three consecutive loses to Iona, 66-63, on Dec. 8, to Fairfield, 76-66, on Dec. 10 and to St. Bonaventure, 69-44, on Dec. 16.
Canisius senior Megan Lyte scored a team-high 14 points in the loss for the Blue and Gold as the Griffs shot just 33.3 percent (15-45) from the field, 22.2 percent (2-9) from 3-point range and 46.2 percent (12-26) from the free-throw line. The 44-point effort for Canisius marks the fewest points scored by the team in a non-conference game since Dec. 30, 2005, when the Griffs lost at Eastern Michigan by a 70-44 count. Canisius senior Jessie Lamparski scored nine points and dished out an assist in the loss, with freshman Brittané Russell posting seven points and two assists in her first collegiate start. Jessie Lamparski and Lyte are the 22nd and 23rd players in school history to play in 100 career games. The Griffs were credited with a season-high six blocked shots in the loss against the Bonnies, the most for the team since Jan. 5, 2006, when the Blue and Gold registered seven blocks against Siena at home.
Canisius enters today’s game with a 6-2 record in non-conference games this season. The six non-league regular season wins for the Blue and Gold are the most under head coach Terry Zeh. Senior Jessie Lamparski made her 70th consecutive start for the Griffs against St. Bonaventure on Dec. 16, which is every game coached by Zeh. Fellow senior Megan Lyte led the Griffs in scoring with her team-high 14 points against St. Bonaventure on Dec. 16 - the fifth time this year and 24th time in her career she’s led the Blue and Gold in scoring. Canisius enters today’s contest with at least one 3-point basket in the last 370 games. The last time the Griffs went without a 3-pointer was Jan. 8, 1993, when the Blue and Gold went 0-for-9 from behind the arc in a 79-65 home loss to Fairfield. Through the first 10 games of the season, Canisius is outscoring its opponents 309-264 in the first half. The Griffs have held the lead at halftime in nine of the 10 games this season and in 12 of the last 16 games, dating back to last season.
Amanda Cavo (13.0), Abby Radunske (11.5) and Megan Lyte (11.0) are all averaging in double-figures for Canisus. Lyte is also averaging a team-best 6.0 rebounds per contest. Jessie Lamparski has dished out a team-high 4.0 assists per game.
THE SYRACUSE-CANISIUS SERIES
This is the 11th meeting between Syracuse and Canisius. The Orange holds a 9-1 advantage in the all-time series. SU is 5-0 at home against the Golden Griffs. Syracuse defeated Canisius, 91-73, last season in Buffalo. The only time the Golden Griffins got the better of the Orange was on Dec. 5, 1991 by the score of 72-63.
