Orange Claims Nine Wins at Day Two of the Nutmeg Invitational

New Haven, N.H.-The Syracuse swimming and diving team concluded competition at the Yale Nutmeg Invitational on Sunday with six individual first place finishes and three relay victories. Senior Luk Boral (Poznan, Poland) and freshman Alex Taraskin (Moscow, Russia) each won two events, giving them each a total of three in the two days of competition. Sophomore Catrina Roth (Aurora, Ill.) also won two events on the second day.
Boral swept the breatstroke events, recording a time of 58.48 in the 100 and a time of 2:05.24 in the 200. Boral set the meet records in both of those events last season. Taraskin broke the Nutmeg Invitational record in the 1,650 free with a time of 16:05.35. He also claimed first place in the 200 free with a time of 1:43.28.Roth placed first in both the 100 (58.02) and 200 (2:06.58) back events. Her time in the 100 back broke the meet record of 58.60, set by Moira McCloskey of Yale in 2003.
Freshman Moshe Kohen (Bat-Yam, Israel) recorded SU's top finishes in the butterfly events. He came in fifth in the 100 (53.12) and second in the 200 (1:57.12). Freshman Arda Isiksalan (Istanbul, Turkey) recorded second place finishes in both the 100 (53.46) and 200 (1:54.67) back.
In the women's 100 free, freshman Katelyn Schumacher (Irvine, Calif.) came in fifth place (54.27), while sophomore Sarah Manning (Manlius, N.Y.) and freshman Caroyln Delkus (Barre, Ontario) tied for seventh (54.36). Freshman Masha Glukhova (Nahabino-3, Russia) performed strong in the breaststroke, taking second place in both the 100 (1:06.88) and the 200 (2:23.07).
In relay action, Roth, Glukohva and Delkus were joined by senior Petra Zavadilova (Olomuc, Czech Republic) to win the 200 medley relay (1:48.96). The Orange also won the women's 400 free relay (3:37.25) with a team comprised of Schumacher, Manning, Delkus and senior Randi Beaulieu (Mississauga, Ontario). Syracuse made it a clean sweep of the 400 free relay as the men's team of Taraskin, Boral, junior Tom Nowakowski (Syracuse, N.Y.) and sophomore Matt Brock (Jacksonville, Fla.) claimed first place (3:10.31).
Syracuse is next in action at the Puerto Rico Invitational, January 2-10.
