As the NFL regular season winds down, many former Orange student-athletes find themselves in the middle of the playoff hunt. There are currently 29 former SU players now competing in the NFL and 20 players are competing to be one of 12 teams that qualify for the NFL playoffs.
One of the hottest teams in the NFL is the San Diego Chargers and recent SU graduate Steve Gregory. The Chargers have won their last six games and are tied for the best record in the NFL with a record of 10-2. Gregory, who was a member of the Orange from 2002 to 2005, has recorded eight tackles in his rookie season.
The Colts are tied with the Chargers for the best record in the NFL. Four former Orange standouts are currently competing for Indianapolis. Marvin Harrison is having another great season, recording 68 catches for 995 yards and six touchdowns. Against Tennessee on Sunday, Harrison caught seven passes for 172 yards and one touchdown. Dwight Freeney and Josh Thomas are both making a contribution, posting four tackles each against the Titans. Ryan LaCasse, who was a member of the 2005 Orange, did not ply against Tennessee but has registered eight tackles during his rookie campaign. Running back James Mungro was placed on injured reserve before the season began.
Other former SU student-athletes looking to help their team make the playoffs include offensive guard P.J. Alexander and offensive lineman Quinn Ojinnaka of the Falcons, offensive tackle Adam Terry of the Ravens, safety Quentin Harris and fullback Kyle Johnson of the Broncos, defensive end James Wyche of the Jaguars, running back Dee Brown, offensive tackle Kevin Sampson and linebacker Rich Scanlon of the Chiefs and New Yor Giants wide receiver David Tyree. Safeties Donovin Darius (Jaguars) and Tebucky Jones (Patriots) have been placed on the injured reserve list for the remainder of the 2006 season.
Two other former Orange standouts are helping their teams as members of the practice squad. Kansas City fullback Greg Hanoian and New York Jets tight end Joe Kowalewski (Read a New York Times Article about Kowalewski) have both helped prepare their teams to give them playoff aspirations.
