The Syracuse University women’s basketball team (5-4, 1-0) finally returns home to host the Central Michigan Chippewas (4-4, 0-0 MAC) on Saturday, December 9 at 1 p.m. inside the Carrier Dome. The Orange is coming off four impressive triumphs at Colgate, 66-49, on Nov. 28, versus Rhode Island, 66-63, on Dec. 2 and UC Davis, 75-55, on Dec. 3 and at St. John’s, 61-59, on Dec. 7 in SU’s BIG EAST opener. CMU is coming off two victories at IPWF, 70-56, on Dec. 2 and against Marygrove College, 94-70, on Dec. 5. SU has only played two games at home (1-1).

GOOD(WIN) TIMING
Junior Fantasia Goodwin picked a very good time to have her best game as an Orange with a career-high 24 points on 9-of-14 (.642) shooting, including 4-of-5 (.800) from behind the 3-point line in a 61-59 BIG EAST victory at St. John’s on Dec. 7. Goodwin also added nine rebounds, all defensive, one assist and one block in forty minutes of action. The junior is averaging 13.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per game for SU, both numbers rank second on the team.
WINNING STREAK
Syracuse’s four-game winning streak is its longest winning streak since the Orange opened the 2004-05 season with five consecutive victories. SU is averaging 67.0 points during the streak, while shooting 47.5 percent (105- 221) from the field, including 42.3 percent (28-51) from behind the 3-point line. The Orange is averaging 16.0 assists, 5.5 steals and 4.3 blocks per win.
SCOUTING THE CHIPPEWAS
The Central Michigan Chppewas (4-4, 1-0) come into this afternon’s game off two victories at IPWF, 70-56, on Dec. 2 and against Marygrove College, 94-70, on Dec. 5. Sharonda Hurd led CMU with 16 points, going 6-for-7 from the floor and 4-for-4 at the free throw line in CMU’s win against Marygrove. She also had five rebounds, all offensive, and a pair of steals. Stacey Verhoff and Britni Houghton both had 13 points and two steals in the game. Houghton was 6-for-7 from the field while Verhoff finish 6-for-8. The other Chippewas in double figures were Dana Westover with 11 and Kaihla Szunko with a career-high 10 tallies. Westover led CMU in rebounding with seven while Ann Skufca had six boards to go with her six points. CMU’s Candace Wilson had an all-around solid performance with eight points, four rebounds, a team-high five assists and two steals. Skufca and Luckett tied for the team lead in steals with three while Skufca and Westover both finished with a team-high two blocks. The Chippewas dominated most of the team stats categories with more assists (18-7), steals (16-6), blocks (5-0) and fewer turnovers (16-21). CMU also tallied a better field goal percentage (.544-.420) and free-throw mark (.900-.643). Marygrove won the rebounding battle, 39-38, and shot a better percentage from 3-point land (.333-.167). The Chippewas have forced an average of 25.3 turnovers per game over the last three games. The Chippewas have gotten to the free-throw line 70 more times than their opponent this season, converting on 43 more freebies. CMU has pounded the offensive glass this season with a 14.9 offensive rebounds per game this year. The Chippewas’ offense has shown improvement over last season as the squad is averaging 70.4 points per game
THE SYRACUSE-CENTRAL MICHIGAN SERIES
This is the first meeting between Syracuse and Central Michigan. The Orange have already played two schools this year for the first time. SU lost at Lehigh, 55-48, on Nov. 19 and defeated UC Davis, 75-55, to win the Brown Classic hosted by Brown University on Dec. 3. Sophomore Keri Laimbeer and Chippawas sophomore Latisha Luckett were teammates at Detroit County Day High School.
