EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – Day three at the BIG EAST Championship provided five top eight finishes for the Orange on Friday. Senior Rob Persico (Fulton, Md.) led the way with a fourth place finish in the 100-backstroke, while junior Luk Boral (Poznan, Poland) earned a fifth place finish in the 100-breaststroke. Junior Wes Matson (Wichita, Kansas) took sixth in the 200-freestyle and the men’s 400-medley relay also finished in sixth. Sophomore diver Tory McKenna (Westford, Mass.) finished sixth on the three-meter board.

Sophomore diver Tory McKenna (Westford, Mass.) finished sixth on the three-meter board.
Persico earned fourth place in the 100-back by posting a time of 50.16, while Boral was fifth in the 100-breast with a time of 55.60. Matson swam the 200-free in a time of 1:40.36 to take sixth.
In the 400-medley relay, Persico, Boral, freshman Peter Gollands (Chelmsford, Mass.) and senior Ryan Caponera (Latham, N.Y.) finished with a time of 3:22.00 to place sixth.
McKenna was the highlight of the women’s third day when she finished sixth on the three-meter board with a score of 360.55. Sophomore Vanessa Duenas (Miami, Fla.) won the consolation final in the 400-individual medley on Friday with a time of 4:25.43 to finish ninth overall.
In the 100-breast, the Orange earned a pair of top finishes as freshman Dani Stein (Boylston Lake, N.Y.) finished 11th, while teammate sophomore Katie Maaske (Jacksonville, Fla.) was 14th. Stein swam the race in 1:05.55 and Maaske finished in 1:05.67.
Junior Petra Zavadilova (Olomovc, Czech Republic) swam the 100-butterfly in 56.87 to finish 12th, while senior Melissa Clune (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) was close behind in 13th with a time of 57.00. Senior Lisa Wittich (St. Louis, Mo.) rounded out the Orange’s competition on Friday by taking 14th in the 200-free with a time of 1:53.18.
After three days of competition, the SU men are in eighth place with 169 points, while the women are in ninth with 144.5 points. Heading into the final day of competition, both the Notre Dame men and women are in the lead. Action will conclude on Saturday with prelims being held at 10:30 a.m. and the finals to take place at 6 p.m. at the Nassau County Aquatic Center.
