Boral Edges Closer to Third Straight BIG EAST 200-Breast Title

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – Junior standout Luk Boral (Poznan, Poland) has put himself in position to defend his BIG EAST Championship in the 200-breaststroke as he finished fourth with a time of 2:02.47 in Saturday morning prelim. In addition to Boral moving on to Saturday night’s finals, eight other Orange will compete in the evenings consolation finals.
Senior Melissa Clune (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) advanced to the consolation finals of the 100-freestyle after finishing the prelim in 12th place with a time of 51.99. Freshman Catrina Roth (Aurora, Ill.) just missed qualifying for the 200-backstroke final as she finished ninth with a time of 2:04.63. The eighth place finisher swam the event in 2:04.10.
Freshman Dani Stein (Boylston Lake, N.Y.) will swim in the consolation final of the 100-breast after finishing 15th in a time of 2:24.06. Sophomore Vanessa Duenas (Miami, Fla.) took 11th in the 200-butterfly with a time of 2:05.23 to advance.
For the men, senior Ryan Caponera (Latham, N.Y.) just missed the cut for the final of the 100-freestyle, finishing in ninth place with a time of 45.50 just off the eighth place finisher who finished in 45.48.
A pair of Orange will be in the consolation final of the 200-back as seniors Rob Persico (Fulton, Md.) and Bobby Schelling (Albuquerque, N.M.) finished ninth and 15th, respectively. Rounding out SU’s evening competitors will include Gus Araujo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) who took 11th in the 200-fly with a time of 1:51.85.
Heading into the final session of the championships tonight, the SU men are in eighth place and the women are in ninth. Competition will conclude Saturday night at the Nassau County Aquatic Center with the finals beginning at 6 p.m.
