The Carrier Dome hosted the BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championship from 1981 through 2005. The event took place on this date nine times during the past 25 years.
The SU men's team finished fourth at the 1982 championship as Andy Hilburger won the pole vault and Mike Morris won the 55-meter dash.
The event took place on this date for three straight years in the mid- to late-80s. In 1986, Al Faber finished first in the pole vault. A year later, Tony Washington won his first BIG EAST title, placing first in the weight throw. Janeen Bonner (long jump, triple jump), Patrina Thomas (shot put) and Diane Thomas (high jump) all won individual titles, helping the women's squad to a second-place finish. A year later, Washington won his second straight BIG EAST title in the weight throw and Chris Hall won the shot put to help the men's team to a third-place finish. In addition to the two individual titles, the Orange won the distance medley relay. On the women's side, Bonner successfully defended her titles in the long jump and triple jump, while Thomas also won her second straight championship in the shot put as the women's team finished second.
In 1992, Bryan Delsite won the the triple jump and long jump for the second straight year. In addition, Bill Rhodes finished first in the high jump, and Kevin McQueen won the 55-meter hurdles. The next year Kim Johnson finished first in the weight throw, while Jenice Gill won the triple jump crown as the women's team finished third.
Alicia Crowd finished first in the 400-meters and Cheree Hicks won the shot put at the 1999 championship. The conference meet also took place on this date in 1998 and 2004.
The Syracuse men's basketball team has played just once in the Dome on this date. John Wallace scored 20 points to lead the Orange to an 85-72 win against Pittsburgh in 1995.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
