SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Johvonne Hernandez (Port Isabel, Texas) won the weight throw in the Syracuse Invitational with an NCAA provisional toss of 19.78m on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Manley Field House. The mark broke the Invitational, facility, and Syracuse indoor record. Both the men and the women defeated Binghamton in dual meet competition. The men won 82-60 and the women won 101-42 as the Orange took home a total of 17 individual wins in the two-day competition.
Hernandez broke Faith Thompson’s Invitational and Manley Field House record of 19.36m that she set last year. She also topped her own SU indoor record that she set in 2004. Hernandez also won the shot put with a mark of 15.10m.
Senior Craig Stivala (Colts Neck, N.J.), competing unattached, also broke a pair of records in the heptathlon. He won the event with 4,571 points, which is a new Invitational and facility record. He bested Boris Roslov’s 4,474 points which was set last year. Sophomore Zack Whalen (Jamesville, N.Y.) finished behind Stivala with 4,287 points.
For the men, junior Aulton Kohn (Beaufort, S.C.) won the 60m dash for the third time this season with a time of 6.82. He also topped the field in the 200m dash with a mark of 21.74. Junior Matt Lawson (Homer City, Pa.) won the 3000m (8:34.79) while sophomore Benjamin Torvik (Columbus, Ohio) placed third (9:00.69) Senior Brien Flewelling (Unity, Maine) took home top honors in the long jump with a mark of 1.96m while freshman Bernard Bush (Tacoma, Wash.) placed second with a jump of 6.99m. Sophomore Kyle Heath (Farmington, N.Y.) was victorious in the mile as he finished in 4:14.68. Senior Chris Muldoon (Robesonia, Pa.) took home the 5000m event with a time of 14:54.40.
Senior Chris Telesford (Brooklyn, N.Y.), competing unattached, finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 13.83m while Bush finished in third at 13.38m. Sophomore Marcus Vaughn (North Attleboro, Mass.) placed third in the 60m hurdles at 8.55 and senior Jonathon Reed (Latham, N.Y.) finished third in the pole vault at 4.35m. Sophomore Michael Gibbons (Westford, Mass.) placed third in the 800m with, clocking in at 2:03.81.
On the women’s side, junior Sheron Mark (Diego Martin, Trinidad) won the long jump with a mark of 5.66m, the triple jump at 12.19m, and the high jump with a mark of 1.70m. Freshman Nana Sang-Bender (Syracuse, N.Y.) triumphed in the 3000m with a time of 10:10.27. Junior Kelly Pimm (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) took the title in the mile with a 5:11.37 mark. Senior Christen Tucker (Oakland, Calif.) won the 60m dash with a time of 7.70. Junior Candace Ince (Port of Spain, Trinidad) took top honors in the 800m with a mark of 2:17.23. Freshman Lauren McClenney (Ellicott City, Md.) captured the 400m with a time of 59.12 and classmate Kelly Whiteneck (Brodheadsville, Pa.) finished behind her in second at 60.07. Sophomore Keisha Townsend (San Jose, Calif.) claimed the 60m hurdles with a mark of 9.19.
Sophomore Kathleen Sanborn (Rutland, Vt.) finished in second in the 1000m at 2:55.48. Classmate Jillian Drouin (Corunna, Ontario) placed second behind Mark in the high jump with a mark of 1.65m. Sophomore Jennifer Kooken (Derry, N.H.) finished third in the high jump at 1.65m. Senior Sarah Bentley (Schenectady, N.Y.) took third in the pole vault with a mark of 3.45m. Sophomore Brittany Pryor (Niagara Falls, N.Y.), competing unattached, and junior Kyra James (Danbury, Conn.) finished second and third, respectively, in both the shot put and the weight throw behind Hernandez.
SU is back in action when it travels down to Lewisburg, Pa. to compete in the Bucknell Winter Classic on Saturday, Feb. 11.
