CARY, N.C. – The second annual Spirit of Jimmy V Gala on April 21 will honor Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim and Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun. The event benefits The V Foundation for Cancer Research.
Boeheim and Calhoun, Hall of Fame coaches and spirited cancer survivors, will be honored as the “Spirit of Jimmy V” honorees at the event at New York City’s Chelsea Piers’ PIER SIXTY. The “Spirit of Jimmy V” honoree is someone who exemplifies the spirit demonstrated by the late Jim Valvano during his battle against cancer. Jim’s challenge, “Don’t Give Up… Don’t Ever Give Up!”® issued during the inaugural ESPY Awards in 1993 is The V Foundation motto.
The Foundation also announced that ABC Sports’ and ESPN’s John Saunders will host the second annual Spirit of Jimmy V Gala. Saunders was Jim Valvano’s close friend and broadcast partner. Basketball’s legendary announcer and Valvano friend Dick Vitale will be the event’s “Friend of V” keynote speaker.
“We are proud to recognize both Jim Boeheim and Jim Calhoun for their outstanding spirit and achievements on and off the court,” said V Foundation CEO Nick Valvano. “It is exciting to honor two of Jim’s coaching colleagues and to recognize their triumphs over cancer as well as their excellence in the coaching profession.”
Boeheim and Calhoun will join The Honorable Rudolph W. Giuliani as distinguished “Spirit of Jimmy V” honorees. The former New York mayor was the inaugural “Spirit of Jimmy V” honoree at the first-ever Spirit of Jimmy V Gala last April.
Spirit of Jimmy V sponsorships are available, including the “Friend of V” sponsorship which includes a table for 10 persons and a full-page color advertisement in the Gala Tribute Book. Individual tickets are $1,000 each. In addition, Tribute Book sponsorships are available to honor Coach Boeheim and/or Coach Calhoun, with the proceeds funding cancer research grants named in their honor. Donations toward the cancer research grants are also welcomed.
For additional information, to make reservations, receive a Tribute Book ad form or to make a donation to the research grants, contact V Foundation vice president Joyce Aschenbrenner at 1-800-4JimmyV or jaschenbrenner@jimmyv.org.
