SYRACUSE, N.Y. – ESPN announced yesterday that 1988 Syracuse University graduate Mike Tirico will serve as the play-by-play announcer for Monday Night Football. Tirico will be accompanied by former quarterback and former Sunday Night Football analyst Joe Theismann and Tony Kornheiser, who writes for the Washington Post, has a radio show, and is co-host of ESPN’s Pardon The Interruption. The game will be aired on ESPN after spending 36 years on ABC.
Tirico has called a wide variety of sporting events in his career. This past year, he called the FedEx Orange Bowl and the British Open. In addition, he co-hosted the Super Bowl XL Pre-game and Post-Game shows. He also hosted the NBA Finals coverage for ABC Sports.
Tirico has been responsible for play-by-play duties for ESPN NFL games, college football, college basketball, and NBA games for both ESPN and ABC. He is also an integral part of ABC’s golf coverage.
Tirico joined ESPN in 1991 as a Sportscenter anchor. From 1993-2001, he served as the host of Monday Night Countdown, ESPN’s pre-game show leading up to ABC’s broadcast of the game. On November, 1, 1996, Tirico hosted the debut of ESPNews. He has hosted Sportscenter’s coverage of the U.S. Open, the Masters, and the Daytona 500. He has also been a part of coverage for the Super Bowl, the NCAA Final Four, and the NFL Draft.
Prior to joining ESPN, Tirico worked in Syracuse from 1987-1991, when he served as the sports director for WTVH. He was also the play-by-play voice for Orange basketball, football, lacrosse, and volleyball for the Super Sports Network of Cook CableVision.
In 1989, he was named the top local sportscaster by the Syracuse Journal and received an Associated Press New York Broadcasters award for 48 Hours with Syracuse University Football, a documentary on the team’s preparation leading up to a game. In 1987, Tirico was the first recipient of the Bob Costas Scholarship, given to an exceptional broadcast student at the University.
