The Carrier Dome has been the site of three Syracuse University men's basketball games and three lacrosse matches, including a doubleheader featuring the SU men's and women's squads. The three teams have combined for a 5-1 record on this date in the Dome.
The SU lacrosse teams hosted Virginia in a doubleheader on this date in 2003. In the opener, the women's squad defeated No.3 Virginia, 12-11, in overtime. Syracuse trailed, 11-8, with 5:10 left in regulation before Danielle Lillis started the comeback for the Orange with a free-position goal. Monica Joines followed with an unassisted tally to bring SU within one, 11-10 before Leigh-Ann Zimmer tied the game at 11-11 with 1:30 left in the second period. Lillis notched the game-winning goal on a free-position attempt in the first three-minute period of the overtime. She finished with a career-high four goals and earned the BIG EAST Player of the Week award for her efforts.
The second game of the doubleheader also featured a one-goal game as the Cavaliers defeated the Orange, 16-15. With Syracuse leading by three, 9-6, Virginia went on a 7-1 scoring run to take a 13-10 lead at the end of the third quarter. The game remained close throughout the final period as Michael Springer's goal with 1:41 left on the clock tied the score at 15-15. Virginia's Johnny Christmas made sure there wasn't a second overtime game that day as he found the net with 22 seconds remaining to give the Cavaliers the win. Spring finished with a team-high five goals.
The SU men's lacrosse team opened the 1999 season on this date against Rutgers. The Orange registered its most productive offensive day of the season as it defeated the Scarlet Knights, 20-3.
The Syracuse men's basketball has played in the Dome on this date on three occasions. In 1998, Todd Burgan scored the final three points in regulation and the first basket in overtime as the Orange defeated Georgetown, 77-72. SU overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half. Burgan's layup with 1:28 cut the lead one and his free throw with 22 seconds left on the clock forced the overtime period. He scored the first basket of the extra period, giving the Orange the lead for good. Burgan finished with 19 points.
In 1988, Syracuse hosted Villanova in the Loud House. The game was close throughout as neither team led by more than five during the second half. With the score tied, 69-69, Rony Seikaly's layup with 1:25 remaining proved to be the game-winner as the Orange defeated the Wildcats, 71-69. Sherman Dougas led SU with 17 points.
Villanova was also Syracuse's opponent on this date in 1983. Erich Santifer scored 21 points, and Tony Bruin added 19 points as the Orange defeated Villanova, 79-70, in its final home game of the season.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
