The Syracuse men's basketball began its journey to the 1987 Final Four on this date. The Carrier Dome was the site of first- and second-round games that season. The Orange faced Georgia Southern in round one.
Georgia Southern led by one at halftime and scored the first basket of the second half to take a 42-39 lead. SU scored the next five points to take the lead for good. Leading by one, 52-51, with 13:18 remaining, Syracuse outscored Georgia Southern, 10-1, during the next four minutes to take control of the game. The Orange went on to record a 79-73 victory. Rony Seikaly led SU with 22 points, while Sherman Douglas recorded 17 points. Syracuse defeated Western Kentucky two days later to advance to the Sweet 16. SU beat Florida to advance to the Elite Eight where it defeated North Carolina for a spot in the Final Four in New Orleans. Syracuse beat Providence in the national semifinals before losing to Indiana in the championship game.
The men's basketball squad has played two National Invitational Tournament games in the Dome on this date. In 1981, Tony Bruin scored 26 points to lead the Orange to an 88-81 win against Marquette. In 2002, Preston Shumpert scored 22 of his 28 points in the second half to help SU to a 76-66 victory against St. Bonaventure. Kueth Duany scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, and Hakim Warrick came off the bench to record 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The women's lacrosse team played its BIG EAST opener against Georgetown on this date in 2004. Monica Joines scored two goals for SU in a 10-5 loss to the Hoyas.
