HATTIESBURG, MISS. -- The SU women’s tennis team lost to Troy, 4-2, in the finals of the Lady Eagle Classic on Sunday in Hattiesburg, Miss. The loss snaps the Orange’s nine-match winning streak. Syracuse beat West Virginia and Southern Miss en route to the finals this weekend. Junior Ashley Lipton (Saratoga, Calif.) had a standout weekend as she went undefeated at the event winning all three of her singles and doubles matches. She now has 107 career wins and has moved up to 23rd on the SU career wins list.

Syracuse won the doubles point for the 13th straight match against Troy. Sophomores Victoria Vaynberg (Princeton, N.J.) and Catherine Zawadzki (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won 8-2 at number one doubles, while Lipton and junior Carolina Huignard (Don Mills, Ontario) won by the same score at number three. Number two doubles did not finish.
Troy evened the match when, for the second straight match, junior Katie Bramante (Endwell, N.Y.) had to retire after the first set. Zawadzki lost in three sets at number two, 6-7, 6-2, 6-0, while Lipton squared up the match at 2-2 with her 7-5, 6-1 victory at number five.
With the dual tied at 2-2, flights one and four went to third sets with freshman Maria Vasilyeva (St. Petersburg, Russia) losing the deciding set in her match at number four to lose the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Vaynberg was outlasted in three sets at flight one, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, to clinch the victory for Troy. Flight six singles did not finish.
SU moves to 11-4 (3-0 BIG EAST) with the loss and will next be in action on Saturday, April 1 when it travels to take on DePaul at 11 a.m.
