Doubles Point Helps DePaul Escape for Win Against Syracuse

MILWAUKEE, WISC. -- The Syracuse Orange nearly pulled off an upset of DePaul on Saturday, losing to the Blue Demons, 4-3, in Milwaukee, Wisc. The Orange lost the doubles point for the first time in 13 outings, which proved to be the difference as the two teams split the singles competition with three wins apiece. Junior Ashley Lipton (Saratoga, Calif.) won a pair of matches, as did her doubles partner junior Carolina Huignard (Don Mills, Ontario) who teamed with Lipton to win at number three doubles and then stepped in to replace an injured senior Wei-Ming Leong (Ipoh, Malaysia) to earn a win in singles.

The Blue Demons got ahead in the race for the doubles point when Leong and junior Katie Bramante (Endwell, N.Y.) were forced to retire in the third game of the match. The Orange evened the score when Lipton/Huignard ran away with an 8-2 victory at number three. Sophomores Victoria Vaynberg (Princeton, N.J.) and Catherine Zawadzki (Brooklyn, N.Y.) lost 8-6 to give DePaul the 1-0 lead heading into singles.
In singles, SU fought back and quickly took the lead as freshman Maria Vasilyeva (St. Petersburg, Russa) won 6-2, 6-2 at number four and Lipton won 6-3, 6-3 at number five to give the Orange a 2-1 advantage. Zawadzki lost 7-5, 6-3 at number two to even the match.
With the match tied at 2-2, three matches remained, all of which went to decisive third sets. At number one Vaynberg played a highly competitive match, losing 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, while Bramante also won the first set in her match at number three before ultimately losing, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. At number six, Huignard came back from losing the opening set 6-1 to with the next two 7-5, 6-1 and take the match. With DePaul winning two of the three three-setters, the Blue Demons earned the 4-3 victory against the Orange.
DePaul improves to 13-5 (4-1 BIG EAST) with the win, while the Orange is now 11-5 (3-1 BIG EAST) and has lost back-to-back matches for the first time since it lost the first two matches of the season. Syracuse will take on Marquette at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
