With 33,015 fans in attendance, Syracuse defeated Georgetown, 89-87, in an overtime thriller in the final regular-season game of the 1989-90 season. Derrick Coleman scored 27 points in his final performance in the Loud House, while Billy Owens added 23 points in the victory.
The Orange held a 45-40 halftime advantage after outscoring the Hoyas, 15-4, during the final three minutes of the opening half. SU led by as many as nine early in the second half but couldn’t pull away, and Georgetown tied the score at 79-79 with 28 seconds left in regulation. Alonzo Mourning hit two free throws with four ticks left on the clock to give the Hoyas the lead. But Owens was fouled with one second remaining and went to the free-throw line for two shots. He hit both attempts from the charity stripe, forcing overtime.
The two teams traded baskets early in the extra period before Coleman’s 10-footer gave the Orange the lead for good. Mourning was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line with 1:06 remaining to cut Syracuse’s lead to 87-86. That was as close as the Hoyas would get as Stephen Thompson’s layup with 25 seconds left sealed the victory for SU. Dikembe Mutumbo hit 1-of-2 from the free-throw line with nine seconds remaining for the 89-87 final.
Seniors Lawrence Moten and Lucious Jackson played their final home games in the Loud House on this date in 1995. Moten scored 23 points and Jackson finished with 18 as the Orange defeated Boston College, 90-62. Michael Lloyd led SU with 26 points.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
