CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Four different Virginia players tallied three goals apiece as the third-ranked Cavaliers defeated Syracuse, 20-15, at Klockner Stadium. The victory improved UVA's season record to 5-0, while the Orange is now 1-1.
The 20 goals were the most given up by a Syracuse squad since March 29, 1997, when Brown defeated the Orange, 20-12.
SU got off to a quick start, taking a 7-4 lead in the first quarter, behind three goals by Virginia transfer Joe Yevoli. The Cavs responded by outscoring the Orange 8-1 during the second 15 minutes to take a 13-8 lead into halftime.
Virginia senior attackman Matt Ward paced the Cavs with three goals and two assists in the first half. That is what he finished the game with on the final stat sheet. Meanwhile, Ben Rubeor, Drew Thompson and Matt Poskay also chipped in with three goals each.
The Cavaliers capitalized on their extra-man opportunities, scoring four times on five SU penalties. The Cavs also held a 23-16 advantage in faceoffs and a 47-33 edge in groundballs. For the game, the Cavs dominated time of possession and outshot Syracuse, 57-32.
SU closed to within three goals three times in the second stanza, the last time with 6:03 remaining in the contest when freshman midfielder Dan Hardy registered his second goal of the afternoon to pull the Orange to within 17-14.
Ricky Smith's goal in transition with 5:05 remaining increased UVA's lead to 18-14 and squelched any hopes of a late Syracuse run.
Redshirt freshman Pete Coluccini played the first half in goal for Syracuse. He recorded seven saves, before giving way to sophomore Jake Myers who stopped six shots.
Virginia also used two goaltenders. Kip Turner had two saves in the first half, while Bud Petit made six saves in the second.
SU returns to action on Friday, March 10, against Georgetown at the Carrier Dome. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be televised LIVE by Time Warner Sports 26.
