The Orange regained its form in doubles play on Sunday, winning the first point of the match by sweeping the three doubles matches. At number one, Vaynberg/Zawadzki earned an 8-4 victory, while senior Wei-Ming Leong (Ipoh, Malaysia) and junior Katie Bramante (Endwell, N.Y.) won by the same score at flight two. Juniors Ashley Lipton (Saratoga, Calif.) and Carolina Huignard (Don Mills, Ontario) had their run of 13 straight wins come to an end as they lost 8-3 at number three. Their 13 consecutive victories tied the SU school record for consecutive wins, previously set by Stehpanie Rice and Amy Schiff in 1983-84.
Vaynberg earned a straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 victory at number one singles with her doubles partner Zawadzki winning by the same score at number two. At number three, freshman Maria Vasilyeva (St. Petersburg, Russia) won the first set 6-0, however would need a third set super-breaker to earn a victory. Vasilyeva won the decisive third set breaker, 10-5.
Lipton moved to 22nd on the schools all-time wins list with her 6-2, 6-2 victory at number four singles. She now has 111 career wins and needs just one more to tie Gillian Tippett for 21st all-time. She has won 12 straight singles matches to tie the school record for consecutive singles victories set by Erica O'Neill in 1994-95. Also moving up the SU record books against the Golden Eagles was Leong, who won 6-4, 6-1 at number five singles to give her 127 career triumphs, giving her sole possession of 16th all-time in career wins. Huignard picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number six to improve to 5-1 in dual singles matches this season.
SU will next be in action on Friday, April 7 when it travels to take on Connecticut at 12 p.m. Next weekend, the Orange will play its final two regular season road duals of season.
