TAMPA, FLA.-- The Syracuse women’s tennis team lost to #74 Louisville, 4-1, in the quarterfinal round of the BIG EAST Tournament in Tampa, Fla. on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Victoria Vaynberg (Princeton, N.J.) recorded the Orange’s lone point in the match by earning a win at number one singles. The Orange is now 15-7, just one win shy of matching the program’s highest single season win total in school history.
The Cardinals won the doubles point by winning all three matches played. The Orange used a pair of unfamiliar doubles pairings in the match as Vaynberg teamed with junior Katie Bramante (Endwell, N.Y.) for the first time this season at number one, while senior Wei-Ming Leong (Ipoh, Malaysia) played with freshman Maria Vasilyeva (St. Petersburg, Russia) at number two.
In singles play, Vaynberg won at flight one, 6-1, 6-4, to move her win streak to six straight wins at number one. Sophomore Catherine Zawadzki (Brooklyn, N.Y.) lost the first set at flight two, 6-1, before coming back to play a close second set before being forced to retire at 6-5 in the second.
Bramante did not finish her match at number three nor did Vasilyeva at flight four. Junior Ashley Lipton (Saratoga, Calif.) lost 6-4, 6-1 at number five, while Leong lost 6-4, 6-2 at number six.
Louisville advances to take on host school South Florida on Saturday. Notre Dame and DePaul will play in the other semifinal.
