The Syracuse men’s and women’s lacrosse teams have combined for a perfect 3-0 record in games played in the Carrier Dome on this date. The men’s squad won its only contest in overtime, while the women’s team has averaged 16 goals in its two wins.
Massachusetts visited the Dome on this date in 1996. The Minutemen led by three, 9-6, with 9:35 remaining. Rob Kavovit scored two straight goals to cut the lead to one, and Casey Powell found the back of the net with six seconds left on the clock to force overtime. SU took advantage of the momentum it gathered in the fourth quarter as Kavovit scored his third goal of the game 44 seconds into the overtime period to give the Orange a 10-9 win.
In 2002, the Orange women’s team scored the last four goals of the first half and led by as many as 12 in the second as it posted an 18-8 victory against Virginia Tech. Leigh-Ann Zimmer scored a team-high five goals and had one assist, while Carrie Soults had three goals and two assists.
Syracuse hosted Ohio State in 2000. SU shutout the Buckeyes in the first half, building a 7-0 halftime lead, on its way to a 14-7 win. Erica Hoffman and Karen Healy scored three goals apiece to lead the Orange offense.
The Syracuse football program hosted the Nike Football Clinic and the program’s annual Spring Game on this date in 2001.
In addition to Syracuse athletics events, the Dome has hosted two other events on this date. In 1995, the World Tour of Figure Skating Champions made a stop in Syracuse for a show at the Dome. The final day of the Billy Graham Crusade took place in the Dome on this date in 1989.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
