The Syracuse men’s lacrosse team has played in the Carrier Dome five times on this date during the past 25 years, winning all five contests. Hobart and Loyola have each been SU’s opponent twice on this date.
The Orange didn’t play a home game in the Dome until 10 years after the building opened. In 1991, SU hosted Hofstra. Syracuse posted nine goals in the first and third quarters and tied a single-game record for goals scored in its 30-10 victory. Sixteen different players scored for SU, led by Matt Riter who tallied six goals.
Syracuse hosted Hobart on this in back-to-back seasons. In 1993, Syracuse outscored the Statesmen, 12-2, in the first half and went on to a 22-8 victory. Riter again led SU’s offensive attack with five goals. A year later, Syracuse outscored Hobart, 8-2, in both the first and fourth quarters in a 28-14 victory. Twelve different Orange scored goals, led by Roy Colsey who found the back of the cage six times.
SU overcame a 4-1 first quarter deficit in a 13-11 victory against Loyola in 1996. The Orange led by one, 5-4, at halftime, but found itself trailing, 10-8, with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter. Jim Morrissey found the back of the cage with 32 seconds left in the third to cut Loyola’s lead to one, and the Orange scored four unanswered goals in the fourth to take the lead for good. The Greyhounds scored the game’s final goal with 5:20 remaining as SU recorded a 13-11 win. Morrissey finished with three goals and an assist, while Rob Kavovit had two goals and three assists.
The two teams met again in the Dome in 2002 in front of a crowd of more than 9,000. The Orange jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game and went on to a 15-6 victory. Josh Coffman led SU with three goals and three assists. Brian Nee and Spencer Wright scored three goals a piece.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
