Women's Rowing Hosts Orange Challenge Cup On Alumnae Weekend

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse women's rowing team plays host to Pennsylvania and Northeastern on Saturday, April 8, on Onondaga Lake for the Orange Challenge Cup. The Orange has won the Cup the last three years and five times overall. It is also Alumnae Weekend for SU, featuring distinguished alumni Emme (Entwistle) Aronson and Tracy (Rude) Smith.

Action on the lake begins at 8:00 a.m. with the novice eight race. A complete schedule of events and lineups can be found below.

Following the races in the morning is the Rowing Team & Alumnae Luncheon which will be held at Justin's Grill Restaurant and features Emme and Smith.

Emme, a 1985 graduate of Syracuse, was a four-year letterwinner for the Orange and is a member of the Orange Plus Hall of Fame. Upon graduating from SU, Emme became a supermodel, television host, best-selling author, lecturer, and clothing designer. She was twice named as one of People Magainze’s “50 Most Beautiful People.” Ladies Home Journal dubbed her as one of the “Most Important Women In America” and one of the “Most Fascinating Women of the Year.” Also, she has been honored as Glamour’s “Woman of the Year.”

After graduating from Syracuse in 1990, Smith was chosen to the U.S. national team. That year, she was a member of the second-place eight and sixth-place four without coxswain at the World Championships. A year later, she was a member of the national champion eight at the World Championships. In 1992, Smith represented the Orange in the Olympics, the only Syracuse graduate to represent the United States at the Games. In Barcelona, she was a member of the American squad that finished sixth in the finals of the eight with coxswain race. Smith is also a member of the Orange Plus Hall of Fame.
