SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Syracuse women’s tennis team earned a 5-2 victory in its final road dual match of the regular season at Seton Hall, Saturday night. Sophomore Victoria Vaynberg (Princeton, N.J.) led the charge playing to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number one singles. Junior Ashley Lipton (Saratoga, Calif.) was pushed to three sets in her singles match, however came out on top to move her school record win-streak to 14 straight matches. SU is now 14-5 (6-1 BIG EAST) on the year, marking the third highest win total in a season for the Orange all-time.
SU won the doubles point against the Pirates as Vaynberg and sophomore Catherine Zawadzki (Brooklyn, N.Y.) pulled out an 8-6 victory at number one, while Lipton and junior Carolina Huignard (Don Mills, Ontario) won 8-5 at number two to give the Orange the first point of the match. Syracuse had to forfeit flight three.
Vaynberg continued her stellar play this season by posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number one to improve to an impressive 12-4 at flight one singles this season. Zawadzki won her third-straight match at flight two singles, 6-3, 6-4, while junior Katie Bramante (Endwell, N.Y.) got off to a slow start as she lost the first set, 6-0, before coming back to run away with the next two sets and the match, 6-1, 6-1.
Lipton won the opening set at flight four, 6-0, before being pushed to a tiebreaker in the second, in which she lost 9-7 to force a third-set super-breaker. With her school record 13-match winning streak on the line, Lipton stepped up and pulled out the decisive breaker, 10-6. Her win moves her to 20th on the SU all-time wins list with 114.
At flight five, Huignard lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Syracuse had to forfeit flight six.
SU will next be in action on Friday, April 14th when it hosts its final regular season dual match against St. John’s at the Drumlins Tennis Club in Syracuse, N.Y. at 1 p.m.
